Florida Attracted Slightly Fewer Visitors in 2009

Thursday, April 1st, 2010

Florida attracted only slightly fewer visitors in 2009 than it did in 2008, according to a report from Visit Florida, the state’s quasi-private tourism marketing agency, as reported in a recent Orlando Sentinel story. The estimated 80.3 million people who visited Florida in 2009 was down just 0.8 percent from the 80.9 million a year earlier. Total visitation remains relatively steady, but they are spending much less. For instance, Disney was able to keep attendance from slumping, but that effort pinched its bottom line as heavy discounts were used to lure cash-strapped tourists. Domestic visitors remained steady, Canadian visitors dropped 6.4 percent, and overseas visitors, the most lucrative category of traveler, declined 4.3 percent.
